Hoax: Mexican Supermarket Receiving Donations To Build Border Wall

A fake photograph of a Mexican supermarket ad saying the store is taking “donations” to build the wall along the U.S. Mexico Border is circulating on the internet.

The hoax stems from a campaign promise made by President-elect Donald Trump that he would build wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and make Mexico pay for it.

KAWC Stephanie Sanchez reports.

The fake photograph is of a grocery receipt from Soriana, a popular Mexican grocery and department store retail chain headquartered in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

The image circulating on social media networks claims customers are being charged “10 pesos”, which is nearly 50 cents in American currency, as a donation for the construction of the wall along the U.S. Mexico Border.

Soriana, which has more than 800 stores across Mexico, issued a statement saying the picture is absolutely false and obviously manipulated.

The statement further reads, “We affirm our position and commitment with our country as a 100% Mexican company, as one of the biggest job generators in the country and with an important business platform for our suppliers and commercial partners.”

"Our commitment has been and will always be with our country and particularly with the Mexican family economy."
