YPD Shares Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

YPD

As many people head out to do some holiday shopping this Thanksgiving weekend, so are burglars to take your vehicle or belongings.

KAWC’s Stephanie Sanchez reports on some safety tips to help keep you and your property safe.

Vehicle Burglary is often a crime of opportunity.

That’s why the Yuma Police Department is noticing an increase in vehicle burglaries of unlocked cars.

YPD sergeant Lori Franklin says don’t make it easy for thieves to take your vehicle or belongings.

"I’d like to remind the community to always lock your vehicles, close the windows, lock your cars, and do not leave anything of value inside the vehicle where somebody can see it," Franklin says.

Franklin said burglars won’t think twice about entering your vehicle and taking what they want if you leave items in your front or back seat.

With the colder weather upon us, many people may go out and start their cars to warm up. But Franklin says to never walk away from your running unlocked vehicle.

Other tips from YPD, always try to park in an area with good lighting whether it’s in front of your residence or when you’re out shopping.

If your street light is out, call and have it fixed. When out shopping, stay away from darker areas of the parking lot.
