This week, allegations by dozens of young migrants who were in Yuma Border Patrol custody of mistreatment and even sexual abuse by some agents were reported. KAWC’s Victor Calderón spoke with Anthony Porvaznik, Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector, for reaction.
Chief Porvaznik said he and Yuma agents treat all migrants with dignity and compassion. Porvaznik said all allegations are taken seriously and are subject to an independent investigation.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say the allegation of sexual assault of a 15 year old girl by a male agent is already under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General.
Porvaznik said migrants have access to food and water, showers and laundry facilities, among other necessities. He said posters in Spanish are placed throughout the temporary tent facility explaining the rights migrants have while in custody and that there is a zero tolerance policy by Border Patrol officials of any abuse or mistreatment by agents.
