A vast network of canals stretch like veins off the Colorado River.  They provide water to communities hundreds of miles away and nourish the region’s vibrant agricultural industry.

But the often muddy and fast flowing canals can be a “death trap” for those who venture too close.

KAWC’s Stephanie Sanchez introduces us to the first responders responsible for dangerous canal rescues.

Emergency rooms across the nation are busy. Many visits are for non-life threatening conditions and can be costly. A program in Yuma County wants to prevent unnecessary ER visits by bringing back an old idea--house calls made by the local fire department.

Arizona Western College celebrated its new state-of the-art Public Safety Institute facility Tuesday morning at a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by local education and law enforcement officials. 

"This may be just a building to some people but to us its a phenomenal result of a partnership," Yuma Sector Deputy Chief Patrol agent Eric Odden said.

The 8,500 square foot facility was built with the partnership of local, state, and federal public safety agencies.
